Photoelectric smoke alarm technology may be more responsive to visible particles produced by most smouldering fires. Ionisation smoke alarm technology may be more responsive to invisible particles produced by most flaming fires. Ionisation smoke alarms take longer to respond to smouldering fires than photoelectric smoke alarms. This longer period of response results in lower visibility from smoke which makes escape more difficult. Ionisation smoke alarms are identified by the radiation symbol. Installation of the photoelectric smoke alarms only is the requirement for the new Queensland legislation.
